Evaluation
Preliminary
My task was to practise using ‘photo shop’ and design a front cover of a school magazine. My front cover can relate to other magazines by having bright and imaginative font to draw the reader in, as well as having a title, I have inside features and a big image that can take up the whole page.We went out around school to take images then we came back into our lesson and designed a front cover, as ideas. Most of the photos I took were like photos I’ve seen famous people do, which would have given my magazine a really good effect. My main photo is of the art block, this is one of the best buildings in the school which gives the school a good overall image and makes the school look modern and new. As Mr Ramsden is the new headmaster, many children and parents will want to know about him, what he is like and where he has come from. So an interview with him will influence people to read and buy the magazine.
The one design I made was the photo I chose, I had a few very good images, and decided to use the one that I could edit to make my school magazine appropriate and better.
My final piece is very difficult as it didn’t go the way I wanted it to. I found the computers (Mac’s) very frustrating so I just uploaded an image and created the image I have now.
Technology extended my creative control by letting me change the image to something I wanted, I could change the effect totally, I used a tool which I didn’t mean to click on and the picture totally changed and took a snowy effect.Technology also obstructed my creative control by sometimes not editing the photo part I wanted it to. For example I would have an idea in my head but then it wouldn’t go right, and I may have got something totally different which I found very frustrating and annoying. My ideas show a student going into the art block to work, as well as giving an idea that school can be a very lonely place for some people, as he is walking up the slope on his own.
If I could make changes then I would. I would include more images more writing on the front, and a much better layout which I would create by doing more designs.Research into Real Music MagazineI found out that EMAP own some of the top magazines. If my magazine got published then EMAP would be the owners of my magazine. I saw that a lot of their magazines are funky coloured, popular band coverage and a lot of information about latest music news. I investigated NME and a lot of there magazines influenced me and gave me ideas for my work. There house style is similar to mine but I have added my own ideas.Initial IdeasI looked at many magazines and decided on mixing and matching styles. I chose a black background on which any colours will match when on top of it. My target readers will be all types of festival indie goers as well as 15-18 year old boys any girls who are very indie and love life and music. I used a lot of buzz words to catch the reader’s eye; this may influence them to buy my magazine. On the font of my magazine cover I have an image of a girl, with a rhetorical question saying ‘what has she done now?’ this also will hopefully make the reader want to know what has happened.Reality? My magazine I feel could easily get away as being a real music magazine. The images are big and stand out, I have a couple of my pictures down in the bottom corners, as well as one picture in the middle which has the rhetorical question, my font is big for the title of the magazine so it’s the first thing you see when you look at the magazine. I downloaded a font off of ‘Dafont.com’ which gave me many variety’s of font which I could choose and pick and use on my front cover. The house style is very realistic, the constant black background and red and white writing is in my magazine throughout. It could also look different to a real magazine as the pictures aren’t cropped perfectly. Also real magazines properly have many different pictures, whereas I didn’t take enough which limited my choices.

Conclusions to my questionnaire
1. The results show that many of the people I asked do read magazines. The majority of these people like rock magazines which include ‘Kerrang’ and ‘Metal Hammer’ another popular magazine within my readers was ‘Q’ and ‘Heat’, ‘Q’ is an Indie magazine which will relate to my magazine, and Heat is a gossip magazine. When I got answers back I realised almost half the people put gossip and fashion magazines which isn’t relevant to the course, I could have changed this by putting either answers to the question, or change the question from “Do you read any magazines? To “Do you read any Music Magazines?”
